In 2024, Avalanche shook things up with a bold move—rebranding subnets into Avalanche L1. But this wasn’t just about a new name; Avalanche introduced groundbreaking technical upgrades, performance boosts, and innovations that have made Avalanche L1 the go-to choice for 186+ projects, including big players like Deloitte, Mastercard, Lemonade, and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR).

Of course, Avalanche9000’s out-of-the-box  capabilities, combined with legacy features like full customization control, a wide array of tools, and seamless inter-chain messaging, have caught the attention of enterprises. But, we’ll dive into two standout features: Avalanche L1’s 100ms transaction latency and its globally distributed network.

A bit about Avalanche L1

Avalanche L1s (prev. subnets) is a sovereign network that allows for creation of highly use-case specific permissionless L1 chains and permissioned L1s for different application needs. Like, it offers speed & performance to games, customization & control to institutional applications, and end-to-end interoperability plus lower fees to DeFi apps. Now, after the launch of Avalanche9000, Avalanche L1s has reduced 99% in the cost of deploying L1 and it offers the below key benefits:

  • Quick finality with low latency (~2 sec)
  • Increased throughput (from 1k to 10k tps)
  • Higher scalability (10k to 10M nodes)

As a result, hundreds of new and next-gen L1s are now creating their Avalanche L1. However, Avalanche9000 is not just about reducing the fee, it has a lot more to offer. Eager to dive deeper? Refer to this article

Is Avalanche9000 really about 1000x cheaper L1 costs, or is there more?

100ms Tx Latency & Globally distributed network– The blend on-chain builders want

Let’s first highlight tx latency and global distribution. Latency in a blockchain network refers to the fastest block time i.e. the total turnaround from transaction initiation to its inclusion as a block. Speaking about global distribution, it’s a concept in which a blockchain is worldwide distributed, its trustless, and integrated with interoperable architecture. This system allows networks in a ecosystem (for example sovereign Avalanche L1s) to achieve concensus even when some of the networks fail to respond or encounter a security/performance issue.

As discussed, Avalanche L1 offers quick finality with a target between 100ms and 2 seconds. While this much block time is the absolute need, achieving it is still the target for so many blockchains. And the situation becomes even more challenging in the case of a globally distributed network. That’s because in a global distribution, a transaction is confirmed when at least 67% of the network responds positively. This means that if 33% of the network has an RTT (round-trip-time) of more than 100ms, the block confirmation time will exceed, slowing down the network.

A common alternative recommended for custom network is to give up the global distribution and focus more on regionally distributed networks. This will easily offer 100ms transaction latency. However, majority of L1 builders won’t prefer giving up on the global distribution. Knowing this, Avalanche L1 now offers 100ms tx latency while ensuring its network of Avalanche L1 remains globally distributed.

How Avalanche L1s achieves 100ms block time and maintain its global network?

Below is a brief overview of the innovative approach/mechanism that Avalanche L1s uses to achieve sub-second finality:

  1. Random sub-sampling- Avalanche L1s has introduced a completely new consensus, instead of classic consensus where validators should agree on a state.  Random sub-sampling allows L1 networks to randomly select a validator subset for each of its transactions. Hence, there’s no wait time and consensus can be reached in less than 1 second.
  2. Probabilistic consensus- Given that transactions on Avalanche L1s are finalized by random validators, the probability of these transactions being finalized increases upon each validation. And, continuous validations allows for high level of probability for transactions to be finalized and correct. This method enables quick validation, in contrast to traditional consensus mechanism which has absolute certainity and it’s really time-consuming.
  3. Gossip protocol- Avalanche L1 are based on a gossip-style protocol to allows nodes to communicate efficiently with each other. Immediately after a node receive transaction, it spreads the information quickly to ensure fast consensus and enhanced network responsiveness.
  4. Adaptive corruption resistance- Consenus on Avalanche L1 (or the entire Avalanche Network) is designed for high resiliency, which is an important feature missing from the classical consensus. This means, even a portion of validators turn maliciousm they won’t impact the whole system. Such resiliency is achieved through random sub-sampling and iterative process of validation, hence malicious actors in Avalanche can’t impact the consensus and network’s performance.

Avalanche L1s mastering 100ms tx latency, globally distributed architecture, & more:

Avalanche L1 has got widespread popularity for its cutting-edge features  and customization, especially after its Avalanche9000 upgrade. Hence, a range of custom L1s has been beneffing from 100ms transaction latency, globally distributed architecture, fast consensus, security, and more. For now, let’s talk about the 4 newest chains that are launching as Avalanche L1 (sorted by launch date):

  • UPLINK:

Uplink is holding the proud tag for launching as the first Avalanche L1 in DePIN category. Since launch, the network has gathered 150k+ users, 40k+ registered routers, and 15,982 verified routers. Plus, it is growing fast to bridge the gap between traditional enterprises and community-powered network models. Powered by Avalanche L1 tech, Uplink achieves–

  • Quicker transaction confirmation.
  • Faster, better connectivity.
  • Enhanced privacy, access control benefits, and security.
  • Excellent uptime.
  • Seamless cross-chain connectivity.
  • FCHAIN:

FCHAIN is launched as the new Avalanche L1 to support Faraway gaming ecosystem on Avalanche. FCHAIN is a project from ‘F Foundation’ that simplifies next-level game designing for studios and developers. With Avalanche L1, integrated with Avalanche9000 upgrade, FCHAIN leverages the following main features:

  • Fast block time of less than 1 second with Avalanche L1’s unique architecture and sub-second finality system.
  • 100% customization to offer high level of control and customization for FCHAIB, be it for staking economics, gas, native tokens, TPS, etc)
  • Permissionless validator set to increase decentralization on the network and minimize the side effects that can possibly come from other ecosystems.
  • Regulatory compliance integrated with custom permissions and geo-restrictions.
  • Multi-VM-compatibility for scaling with any virtual machine for maximized performance.
  • LAMINA1:

Also, there’s LAMINA1– a metaverse project dedicated for digital content creation and ownership. Within the first 3 weeks of launch, LAMINA1’s daily active addresses jumpe from <1k to ~11k and its daily transactions went ~10k to ~50k. Like every other L1, LAMINA1 also seeks to benefit from Avalanche L1’s 100ms transaction latency, though it has an average block time of 3.40 seconds at the moment and it has total transactions of 7236.807K. LAMINA1 is achieving this despite being a part of globally scattered network of L1s.

Avalanche L1 is also the top-choice for leading enterprise such as Deloitte, Gunzilla, MapleStory, Shrapnel, Vero Labs, SK Planet, and various projects that are
